According to their latest video update, the family has reached Penang State, Malaysia.

Mohammad Shahrom Mahat, 44, and his wife, Mastura Natasha Malek, 40, sold their three-room flat and Suzuki car to finance the 6-month road trip, which is estimated to cost around SGD100,000 (US$78,000), including the vehicle, travel expenses, insurance and an emergency fund.

The couple are travelling with their two children, Nadine, five, and Seth, six, through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia before reaching Turkey.

According to MothershipMohammad, who is self-employed, will continue his photography business during the trip while Mastura resigned from her job as an educational therapist.

The couple said they enjoy travelling and campervan road trips and had been planning the journey for the last ten years. “Every decision and action throughout has been taken into consideration, including buying and selling of our house,” they said.

“Our family are all excited about our trip. My parents gave us their blessings,” they added.

They originally planned to travel to Morocco instead of Turkey but were unable to sell their flat in time.

They said they will stay with their family temporarily after returning to Singapore and plan to buy another home in the future.

Internet users have left supportive comments on the family’s posts.

“Have the most amazing adventure guys! What a bold and beautiful decision! Wishing your family unforgettable memories on this journey!” one read.

When asked about plans after Turkey, the couple said, “We are going to take it one day at a time.”
