Kolkata: The West Bengal government has decided to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA in the state from Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the process of immediately deporting illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators under CAA has been started.
Accused of failure on previous government
According to media reports, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that the previous government had opposed the CAA and did not implement the necessary provisions of the Centre. We have implemented this law from today 20th May.
He told that according to CAA, people of 7 communities or religions will get citizenship. Those who do not come under its purview will be arrested by the state police. After this they will be handed over to BSF and BSF will make arrangements to send them back.
Work on Detect, Delete, Deportation Framework
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also said during this time that this step is part of ‘Detect, Delete, Deportation’ framework. Communities covered under the CAA will remain out of the new system. Whereas immediate action will be taken against those identified as infiltrators.
Center’s letter cited
At the state secretariat Nabanna, CM Suvendu said that on May 14 last year, the central government had sent a letter to the state. In this it was said that the infiltrators should be handed over directly to BSF. But the previous government failed to implement this important provision. Now we have implemented it.
Who will be under the purview of CAA?
Suvendu Adhikari explained to the refugees the difference between legal protection and illegal immigration. He said that Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities are included under CAA. These are the people who have come to India due to religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan till December 31, 2024. Police cannot take such people into custody.
Process of sending back infiltrators
In fact, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made it clear that those who do not come under this law will be considered infiltrators. After this BSF will talk to BGB and take necessary steps to send them back. This law is being implemented from today.
Police and administration received instructions
The CM official said that instructions have already been given to senior administrative and police officers of the state. The DGP and the Home Secretary have been told that this law will be implemented in all the police stations of the border areas for the security of West Bengal and the country.
Border fencing work in progress
It is noteworthy that the issue of border management and infiltration has always been important in BJP’s Bengal politics. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has also started handing over land to the Border Security Force for erecting barbed wire fencing on the India-Bangladesh border.
