Railways has implemented a new system for the convenience of passengers and crowd control at New Delhi Railway Station. Color based signposts are being installed for different entry routes and platforms of the station, so that passengers can easily choose the right path and reach their platform. According to railway officials, the purpose of this new experiment is to reduce crowding in the station premises and make the movement of passengers more organized. Under this, new directional signboards are being installed towards Ajmeri Gate of the station. Three main colors have been prescribed for the convenience of passengers. These colors will help the passengers to reach their designated entry route and platform directly without any enquiry.

To control the increasing crowd of passengers, the railway administration has implemented a new entry system. Under this, now different entry routes have been fixed for passengers depending on the ticket category. Passengers with unreserved tickets will be given entry through a separate gate, while separate routes have been earmarked for reserved ticket holders. 3 colors have been used in the new boards installed in the station premises. Yellow color signals have been installed for passengers traveling on unreserved tickets. With the help of these indicators, passengers will be able to reach platforms 1 to 16. At the same time, purple colored boards have been installed for reserved ticket holders going from platforms 1 to 15. Apart from this, green color indicators will guide the reserved passengers going towards platform 16.

Under this, now different gates have been set depending on the ticket category and platform. According to the new arrangement, passengers with unreserved tickets will be allowed entry from gate number 12. Gate numbers 8 and 11 have been fixed for reserved ticket holders going from platform 1 to 15. Apart from this, reserved passengers going towards platform 16 will get entry from gate numbers 7 and 10. Railways has also installed color based direction boards outside all these gates, so that it becomes easier for the passengers to identify the correct route and no confusion arises.

New Delhi station among the busiest stations in the country

New Delhi Railway Station is counted among the busiest railway stations in the country. More than 300 trains operate here every day and a large number of passengers travel there. The number of passengers in the station premises increases manifold during festivals, holidays and special occasions. At such times, managing crowd control and arrangements becomes a big challenge. Keeping in mind the increasing crowd and convenience of passengers, Railways has recently implemented color based direction indicator system and separate entry system according to ticket category.

Last year, the railway administration had started a permanent passenger convenience camp in the station premises. In this camp, passengers with unreserved tickets were specially stopped, so that a large number of people do not reach the platform simultaneously and the overcrowding situation can be controlled. On the instructions of the station director, senior officers were also given the responsibility of monitoring the movement of passengers. Its objective was to maintain order in the station premises and to provide safe and smooth travel experience to the passengers. Now moving forward in this direction, Railways has implemented color based direction boards and separate entry system according to ticket category, so that the movement of passengers can be made more organized.

Railway officials told the specialty

According to Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, this new system will help in taking passengers to the right gate and platform. He said that this will reduce unnecessary crowd in the station premises and the movement of passengers will be more organized than before. Under the new system, yellow signals have been installed for passengers with unreserved tickets, while purple and green signals have been installed for reserved passengers. Apart from this, separate gates have also been fixed so that there is less chaos while reaching the platform. Railway officials hope that this experiment will prove effective for both station management and crowd control.

Railways is continuously implementing new arrangements regarding crowd control at New Delhi Railway Station. The major reason for this is also believed to be the stampede incident that took place at the station during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh in February last year. At that time, there was a sudden stampede among the huge and uncontrolled crowd of passengers, in which many passengers died and many people were injured. After the incident, serious questions were raised on the railway administration regarding crowd management. Since then, Railways has continuously started new experiments and arrangements to strengthen crowd control at the station. These include initiatives like permanent passenger convenience camps, separate entry system based on ticket category and now a colour-based signpost system.
