Liu said he fell into depression after losing his right arm and right leg 10 years ago and spent most of his time lying in bed using his phone, which severely damaged his eyesight.
His family tried to motivate him by calling him “useless,” prompting him to return to physical training, having previously been an athlete.
“I am disabled. But as long as my heart is not disabled, I will always be healthy and happy,” he said.
According to the South China Morning PostLiu competed in the under-65kg category at the competition. It was not disclosed how he placed in the competition.
An audience member said the crowd applauded when he appeared on stage. “This is the best recognition for him. Our hearts are full of admiration for him,” they said.
In a video posted to his social media, Liu said he currently receives 1,100 yuan (US$160) a month from a local welfare insurance program for low-income residents. Details about his jobs are not disclosed.
“My biggest wish is that I can do something to reward the gym which allows me to work out in its area for free,” he said.
