Ruben Amorim appears set to make a swift return to management following his challenging tenure at Manchester United. The Portuguese tactician is reportedly being considered as the replacement for Jose Mourinho at Benfica, marking a potential homecoming and a chance to revive his managerial reputation.

Benfica are preparing for a managerial transition, with Amorim emerging as the frontrunner. The 41-year-old, who was dismissed by Manchester United in January, has been without a club since leaving Old Trafford. However, according to reports from The Sun, the Lisbon giants view Amorim as the leading candidate to succeed Mourinho in the dugout.

Although Amorim endured difficulties in the Premier League, his standing in Portuguese football remains high due to his impressive achievements with Sporting CP. The managerial vacancy at Estadio da Luz has surfaced amid speculation that Mourinho is poised to return to Real Madrid. As a result, Benfica have already begun their planning for the upcoming season, identifying Amorim as their preferred choice to guide the team forward.

Reports indicate that Mourinho is on the verge of rejoining Real Madrid after leading Benfica through an unbeaten domestic league campaign. Despite that record, the club only managed to secure third place in the standings, missing out on Champions League qualification. Now, after less than a year at the helm in Lisbon, Mourinho is believed to have been approached directly by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to take charge at the Spanish club. This development has set in motion a chain of managerial moves, potentially paving the way for Amorim’s return to Benfica.

The move would hold personal significance for Amorim. During his playing career, he represented Benfica and eventually retired there in 2017, at a time when Rui Costa served as the club’s sporting director. Amorim later established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches, securing two Portuguese league titles with Sporting in 2021 and 2024. He also claimed the Portuguese League Cup twice with Sporting, having previously lifted the same trophy with Braga in 2020. Costa, now Benfica’s president, is said to remain an admirer of Amorim’s managerial abilities, and their strong professional relationship is reportedly a key factor in the club’s interest in appointing him.

Amorim’s stint in England came to an end following internal issues and disappointing performances. He was dismissed early in the new year after a Premier League draw against Leeds. Over the course of his spell at Old Trafford, he managed 63 matches, securing 25 victories and suffering 23 defeats. Returning to Portugal with Benfica could provide Amorim with the ideal platform to rebuild his managerial career in familiar surroundings.
