An Indian man living in Europe has triggered an online discussion after describing what he called the “biggest work culture shock” for Indians working there. In a video shared on Instagram through the account ‘Our Unscripted Life’, he said the most unexpected difference was not related to salaries, working hours or workplace benefits, but the importance people placed on life outside work.
In the video, he said people in Europe appeared more enthusiastic about their lives after office hours and did not treat work as the centre of their identity. According to him, employees did not glorify staying late at work or constantly remaining busy. He also noted that some people were willing to decline promotions in order to protect their peace and personal lives, adding that success was viewed differently in Europe.
The post suggested that people in several European countries appeared to prioritise personal time and relationships over professional ambition, contrasting this with perceptions of work culture in India.
One user commented, “Turning down promotions, true that,” while another wrote, “This is very true and honestly you see this if you have even travelled across Europe.”
However, some users pointed out that experiences may differ depending on profession, country and individual circumstances. One person wrote, “Depends on the field. In my field in Netherlands this is not true.”
Others offered alternative viewpoints, with one user saying, “Actually to be honest I prefer living in Goa bro.” Another comment suggested that such perspectives were influenced by economic privilege, stating, “This is what people say when they live in rich countries.”
Several viewers also expressed agreement with the overall message shared in the video.
