Konkan Nuclear Power Project : Surrounded by pristine beaches, fishermen, the world-famous Alphonso mangoes, vast cashew plantations and an ecologically rich Arabian Sea, Maharashtra’s scenic Konkan coast is known for its breathtaking beauty. But now India’s biggest nuclear power transformation is going to happen here. Adani, Reliance Industries and National Thermal Power Corporation have proposed major investment projects worth up to Rs 4.5 lakh crore in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Therefore, even if it is true that the development of Konkan will be created, will this beautiful Konkan also be eclipsed? Such a question remains.

It will become one of the largest nuclear power plants in the country but…
The ambitious Jaitapur nuclear power plant being developed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in collaboration with France’s EDF, is getting a new boost for nuclear power as it establishes the Konkan region as the country’s emerging nuclear power hub. The proposed 9,900 MW Jaitapur plant at Rajapur in Ratnagiri district—considered one of the largest planned nuclear power plants in the world—and other newly announced projects could make Konkan Pattaya one of India’s largest nuclear power hubs. Earlier, the locals had opposed the project.
A major contract of the State Govt
The Maharashtra government signed separate MoUs with Reliance Industries Limited, Adani Power Limited and its subsidiary Coastal-Maha Anuurja Limited, as well as National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Mantralaya in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The proposed projects are expected to collectively generate more than 20,000 MW of electricity and create about 1.2 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Energy-rich nation – Fadnavis
Fadnavis said Maharashtra will play a key role in making India an “energy-rich nation”, besides contributing to the country’s long-term net-zero carbon emission goals envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Adani Power Limited and Coastal-Maha Atomic Energy Limited have proposed to set up a 6,000 MW nuclear power plant at Barsu in Ratnagiri district with an estimated investment of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, which is likely to generate around 12,000 jobs.
Many employment opportunities
Reliance Industries Limited has proposed Bharat Small Reactors, Small Modular Reactors and Nuclear Power Reactors at Purnagarh in Ratnagiri district. The capacity of the project ranges from two units of 220 MW each to six units of 1,200 MW each, with the proposed investment ranging from Rs 8,000 crore to Rs 2 lakh crore depending on the final scope. The project is expected to generate more than one lakh employment opportunities.
NTPC Limited has proposed a six-unit nuclear power plant at Devgad in Sindhudurg district, with a combined power generation capacity of between 4,000 and 7,200 MW. The project has an investment of around Rs 1 lakh crore and is likely to create approximately 5,000 jobs.
Together, these projects could add 10,440 MW to 20,400 MW of nuclear power generation capacity in Maharashtra, significantly strengthening India’s clean energy ambitions in the face of rising electricity demand and energy transition goals.
One of the most controversial nuclear power plants
However, the expansion of nuclear power infrastructure in the Konkan region is likely to resurface environmental and livelihood concerns that have surrounded the Jaitapur project for more than a decade. Some groups of local residents, farmers, fishermen and environmental groups have opposed the project, fearing impacts on seismic safety, marine ecosystems, land acquisition and fragile coastal ecosystems. These protests have intensified at times, making Jaitapur one of the most controversial nuclear power plants in India.
Stretching between the Arabian Sea and the high Sahyadri mountain ranges, the Konkan belt is considered one of the most scenic and ecologically sensitive coastal regions in India. Dense forests, jamba stone cliffs, creeks, estuaries, coconut groves, cashew plantations and the world-famous Alfonso mango orchards are the hallmarks of the region. The region supports a thriving economy based on fisheries and tourism, and is also known as the biodiversity hotspot of India’s west coast. But if such destructive projects come up in Konkan at such a time, this biodiversity will disappear. Destruction in the name of development will not take long.
