The truth came out after marriage

When Shikhandi grew up, he was married to the daughter of King Hiranyavarma of Dasharna country. After marriage, the princess came to know that Shikhandi was actually a woman. He told this to his father. Knowing this, Hiranyavarma became angry and started preparations to attack the Panchal kingdom. Shikhandi became very upset by this incident and went towards the forest fearing insult.

Yaksha helped Shikhandi

In the forest, Shikhandi met a Yaksha named Sthunakarn. Shikhandi told him her entire pain. Hearing his plight, the Yaksha felt pity and gave his manhood to Shikhandi. In return he himself started living in a female form. After this, Shikhandi returned to his kingdom after becoming a man. When people saw him in male form, everyone was surprised and King Drupada was also very happy.

Shikhandi became the reason for the defeat of Bhishma Pitamah.

In the Mahabharata war, Arjun had made Shikhandi stand in front of his chariot. Bhishma Pitamah considered Shikhandi to be of female birth, hence he refused to fire his weapon at her. Grandfather Bhishma also knew that Princess Amba had taken second birth as Shikhandi to take revenge. Therefore, he did not raise his weapon against Shikhandi and Arjun got injured and fell on a bed of arrows.
