Liverpool have delivered a major setback update, confirming that forward Hugo Ekitike will be out for nine months after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during their clash with Paris Saint-Germain. This devastating injury not only curtails his club campaign but also ends his hopes of featuring for France in the upcoming World Cup.
The French striker endured a painful moment at Anfield during the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final. He collapsed to the ground without any contact while chasing a loose ball, prompting immediate medical attention. Ekitike was stretchered off in visible pain, and subsequent scans have confirmed the worst fears — a serious Achilles rupture that sidelines him for the remainder of the season. The blow leaves Liverpool without a crucial attacking option during a decisive phase of their campaign.
On Thursday, Liverpool officially confirmed the diagnosis, detailing that the 23-year-old forward had sustained a full rupture of his Achilles tendon. It marks a cruel twist for Ekitike, who had been in superb form this season, recording 17 goals and six assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
Providing further clarification, the club’s statement read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Hugo Ekitike has sustained a serious Achilles injury. The forward had to be substituted during the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after a slip on the turf. Scans on the issue have subsequently confirmed a rupture of the Achilles tendon.”
The injury also has major implications for France’s national team setup. Ekitike had been widely expected to lead the line for Les Bleus at this summer’s World Cup, but the timing of the injury now rules him out of contention for the tournament. His absence represents a significant blow to Didier Deschamps’ attacking plans.
Assuring fans of the club’s full backing during his recovery, Liverpool added: “Ekitike will therefore be sidelined for the remaining weeks of the club season and unable to participate at this summer’s World Cup with France. Further updates will be provided at the appropriate time, with Hugo receiving the full support of everyone at LFC.”
The forward is set to undergo surgery immediately, followed by an extensive rehabilitation process expected to last until early 2027. In the meantime, Liverpool will need to adjust their attacking strategy ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park, a crucial fixture in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
