Douglas Costa has shed light on what he sees as the most significant distinction between Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, drawing from his own experiences playing under both managers during his time at Bayern Munich. The former Brazil international also floated the idea of a surprising international role for the current Manchester City manager.

Costa reflects on his time with Guardiola and Ancelotti at Bayern

Having played under both Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti during his stint at Bayern Munich, Douglas Costa offered insights into their differing coaching philosophies. The Brazilian winger spent two seasons under Guardiola before Ancelotti took over in Bavaria, and he noted that while both managers were successful, their paths to achieving that success were markedly different.

Tactical precision versus personal connection

According to Costa, Guardiola’s approach is rooted deeply in tactical analysis and meticulous preparation, whereas Ancelotti excels in managing player relationships and fostering a positive team environment.

“Guardiola and Ancelotti are different because one lives for tactics and studies everything down to the smallest detail, while the other has extraordinary human management skills,” Costa said in an interview with diretta.

Unexpected international suggestion

As speculation continues about Guardiola’s long-term plans with Manchester City, Costa suggested that the Italian national team could be an ideal next challenge for the Spaniard. He believes that such a move could mark a historic “turning point” for Italian football.

“If the Italian national team were to sign him, it would be a wonderful turning point,” Costa said. “For me, Pep is the best coach of all time, although managing a national team is different from managing a club because you don’t have much time to instil your tactical philosophy.”

Looking ahead

Both Guardiola and Ancelotti are focused on their respective tasks this summer. The Spanish tactician will guide Manchester City in their final Premier League fixture of the season against Aston Villa, though his team has already fallen behind Arsenal in the title race. Reports suggest Guardiola could step down after the campaign, with Enzo Maresca tipped as his potential successor.

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti will aim to lead Brazil to a strong performance at the 2026 World Cup. The Selecao’s squad has been finalised, and they are set to face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C in the North American tournament.
