The 2025-26 season has been a challenging one for Chelsea, leading to much debate over who deserves to be recognised as the club’s Player of the Year. Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill shared his thoughts in an exclusive chat with GOAL, naming Joao Pedro as his pick. The Brazilian forward, who joined the Blues from Brighton in a £60 million ($80m) move, has impressed more than teammates Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.
After netting 30 goals for Brighton over two fruitful Premier League campaigns, Pedro arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2025. He quickly became a key part of a team that went on to celebrate FIFA Club World Cup success in the United States.
However, his bright start in West London faced turbulence when Enzo Maresca was dismissed as manager in early 2026. Successor Liam Rosenior managed 23 games before parting ways as well. Interim boss Calum McFarlane then led Chelsea to the FA Cup final, where they suffered heartbreak at Wembley against Manchester City. The club has since confirmed that Xabi Alonso will take charge from next season.
Although more transfer activity is expected in the upcoming June window, Pedro’s 20-goal haul this season has shown that he will likely play a crucial role in Alonso’s new era at the club.
When asked during a Famous CFC event in the United States to name his 2025-26 Player of the Year, Cahill said, “For me, probably Joao Pedro. I think he's been the standout performer for Chelsea this season in terms of being asked to play in different positions — whether it be as a number 10, the 9, or even on the wing. He’s added goals and assists to his game and has proven to be a top player. I would say him.”
Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez has also improved his attacking output this season, scoring 14 goals across all competitions. The Argentine World Cup winner has drawn comparisons with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.
Speaking about Fernandez’s potential to emulate Lampard, Cahill commented, “I think that’s probably his next aim because he’s a very influential player, particularly when he chips in with goals. I like him in that more advanced role. He reminds me a bit of Frank in the way he times his runs into the box and always seems to be in the right spot to score. If he can consistently hit those numbers, it would be massive for the club. Midfielders who can get 20 goals a season are incredibly valuable.”
He added, “Those kinds of goals make a huge difference to the team’s points tally. I see him as a leader figure, and I think he’ll keep pushing to score more because he’s already delivered some crucial goals this season.”
Neither Pedro nor Fernandez found the net in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, but Chelsea’s strong performances across competitions show they remain competitive and continue to inspire their global fanbase.
Cahill, who lifted two Premier League titles, FA Cups, Europa Leagues, and a Champions League trophy during eight successful years at Chelsea, also emphasised the importance of connecting with supporters worldwide. “That’s what these events are all about — bringing the global Blues family together,” he said. “Being here in Chicago for the Famous CFC event with Coors Light was fantastic. The atmosphere was great despite the result. It’s amazing to meet fans from around the world and see how much Chelsea means to them.”
He continued, “When you travel after retiring, you realise just how big Chelsea really is. Fans come in their hundreds. As players, we usually see them from a distance, so being able to interact with them up close is special. It’s been a great day for everyone, even with the disappointment of the result.”
Chelsea still have two Premier League fixtures remaining this season as they aim for a top-eight finish and European qualification for 2026-27. Their next match sees them face Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on the final day.
Gary Cahill was speaking in Chicago at The Famous CFC presented by Coors Light, marking the final stop of Chelsea FC’s 2025-26 international fan engagement tour. The event allows fans from around the world to connect through Q&As, games, quizzes, and photo opportunities with the Premier League trophy.
