Manchester City have strengthened their squad by completing the signing of French star Rayan Cherki from Lyon on the final day of the summer transfer window, with the attacking midfielder agreeing to a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Premier League champions confirmed the arrival of Cherki from Lyon for a reported fee of €36 million, with an additional €6 million in potential add-ons. His inclusion will enhance Pep Guardiola’s creative midfield options, especially after Kevin De Bruyne’s exit was confirmed earlier this year upon the conclusion of his contract.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cherki’s signing comes at a crucial time as he becomes eligible to participate in Manchester City’s campaign at this month’s Club World Cup. The Frenchman follows Rayan Ait-Nouri, who recently joined from Wolves. Reports suggest that as part of the transfer arrangement, either James McAtee or Claudio Echeverri could be loaned to Lyon for the upcoming season.

WHAT CHERKI SAID

Speaking to Manchester City’s official website, Cherki expressed his excitement about joining the club: “It’s truly a dream come true for me. To join a team like Manchester City and take the next big step in my career is something very special.”

He continued, “Everyone knows how strong City are – they’ve achieved incredible success over the years. I’m looking forward to contributing and taking on the responsibility of helping the team keep winning.”

“I can’t wait to show the City fans what I’m capable of.”

WHAT NEXT FOR CHERKI AND MAN CITY?

Cherki will now be available for selection in City’s Club World Cup fixtures, where they are set to face Wydad Casablanca, Al-Ain, and Juventus in Group G as they aim to add another international trophy to their collection.
