Pep Guardiola’s representative has verified that Al-Nassr made contact with the Manchester City boss, following growing reports suggesting a potential partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo at the reigning Saudi Pro League champions.
Before Guardiola officially announced that he would step down as Manchester City manager at the end of the current season, Al-Nassr initiated an ambitious move to bring him to Riyadh. The Saudi champions’ interest has fuelled speculation about the possibility of a historic collaboration between the Spanish tactician and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Saudi powerhouse reportedly made their approach soon after Guardiola confirmed his decision to leave City, ending a decade-long spell marked by remarkable success and numerous trophies. With Jorge Jesus stepping down after guiding Al-Nassr to both the Saudi Premier League and the AFC Champions League Two titles, the management began exploring high-profile replacements, with Guardiola topping the list.
Reports indicated that the club had tabled an unprecedented, record-breaking salary offer to bring Guardiola and Ronaldo together. The growing speculation prompted Guardiola’s long-time agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, to publicly clarify the reality of these talks.
Orobitg firmly denied the reported financial figures, which suggested a staggering €130 million annual offer. In an interview with Saudi publication Okaz, he stated: “There was contact a month and a half ago, only contact, without any formal commitment or written proposal. It’s not that much money.”
Orobitg further explained that no additional meetings or negotiations are currently planned. He noted that Al-Nassr were not the only party from the Gulf region to express interest in the outgoing City boss. “There was also contact with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation around 15 days ago, but there will be no further discussions for now. At present, neither of them have a realistic chance of signing Guardiola,” he added.
Guardiola is set to lead Manchester City for the final time on Sunday when they face Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium in what promises to be an emotional conclusion to his tenure. After the final whistle and the ensuing farewell, the focus will turn to his next role with the City Football Group, where he is expected to serve as a Global Ambassador.
