An Exceptionally Skilled England XI Missing from the 2026 World Cup Squad

Thomas Tuchel has sparked intense debate with his squad announcement for this summer’s World Cup, as the England manager revealed the group that will head to North America.

England’s depth of talent is truly remarkable, and that becomes even clearer when considering the calibre of players left out of the travelling party.

Here’s a look at an unbelievably talented England XI who will not be part of the 2026 World Cup.

In goal, the selection appears largely justified. Jordan Pickford remains the undeniable first choice, while Dean Henderson provides reliable backup. James Trafford has earned his place as the third-choice keeper and could well represent the future. This means Newcastle United duo Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale find themselves on the periphery.

Being Real Madrid’s first-choice right-back no longer guarantees a spot in the England squad. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s omission in March hinted that the 27-year-old had not done enough to convince Tuchel. Having also struggled to fit into Gareth Southgate’s plans, Alexander-Arnold may become another gifted English player whose international career never truly flourishes.

Harry Maguire’s exclusion was among the earliest revealed online, with the Manchester United defender admitting he was ‘shocked and gutted by the decision’. Maguire had earned a recall in March after impressing during United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick, but Tuchel has decided against retaining the experience of the 66-cap stalwart.

Levi Colwill’s recent return from injury was not enough to secure a call-up. The 23-year-old’s natural preference for the left side could have provided a tactical edge in England’s build-up play, but after missing a significant portion of the season, he will be watching from home this summer.

One of the more unexpected omissions comes in the form of Lewis Hall. Despite Newcastle’s inconsistent performances, Hall appeared to have locked down a left-back slot earlier in the season with several outstanding displays at St James’ Park. Luke Shaw, a crucial figure in past tournaments, has also been left out.

Adam Wharton represents the kind of midfielder England has often lacked — technically refined and more continental in approach. Despite playing a major part in Crystal Palace’s journey to a European final and ranking among the top 10% of Premier League midfielders for big chances created and possession recovered in advanced areas, Wharton has missed out on selection.

No English player scored more Premier League goals this season than Morgan Gibbs-White, who netted 14 times. His late-season heroics almost singlehandedly kept Nottingham Forest afloat, but even that impressive form wasn’t enough to earn Tuchel’s confidence.

Just two seasons ago, the notion of a fully fit Phil Foden missing out on an England World Cup squad would have seemed absurd. Foden was the Premier League’s standout performer in 2023/24 as Manchester City clinched the title. However, a combination of on- and off-pitch issues has led to a dip in form. With seven goals and five assists this season, Foden has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Perhaps the most debated omission of all is Cole Palmer. Despite an injury-hit campaign that limited his impact, Palmer’s composure in pressure situations and strong goal record could be sorely missed by England this summer.

Even in a struggling West Ham side, Jarrod Bowen continued to shine. With eight goals and ten assists in the Premier League, his direct goal involvements surpass any other English player. Yet, Tuchel has opted for Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke instead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin marked his return to international contention in March after a stellar debut season at Leeds United. The forward found the net 14 times in the Premier League following his free transfer from Everton, including four goals in his final five matches. Nevertheless, he has missed out on selection, with Ivan Toney getting the nod after his prolific spell in Saudi Arabia.
