New Delhi: A debate has once again erupted in the country regarding reservation, and this time the spark has come from the country’s biggest court i.e. the Supreme Court itself. The Supreme Court on Friday made a very big and sharp comment regarding reservation and social change. The court asked in simple words why those children whose parents already hold the most prestigious post of the country i.e. IAS officers should get the benefit of reservation.
The court raised serious questions about the repeated exploitation of the quota system by wealthy and influential families who have already advanced far in society by taking advantage of good education and strong economic status. While hearing a case to ‘Creamy Layer’ of backward classes, the Supreme Court of the country clearly said that when both the parents are IAS officers, then demanding reservation for their children is beyond comprehension.
When we got progress, then why the insistence on reservation?
During the hearing of the case, the court said a very important and big thing. The court believed that if both the parents are IAS officers, then there would be no point in demanding reservation for the children. The court stressed that after good education and being economically strong, a person’s status in the society automatically improves. When the family gets educational and economic strength, they also become socially capable. Therefore, repeatedly demanding reservation for such children will never meet this scope. The Supreme Court also made it clear that this is such a serious issue that the time has come to consider it in depth. The court reminded that many government orders already have rules to keep the affluent class out of the benefits of reservation, but the surprising thing is that now people are challenging these rules in the court.
Justice Nagarathna bluntly: Exclude such people from the quota
Justice Nagarathna, who was on the bench hearing this case, adopted a very strict stance. He said that change and dynamism are clearly visible in the society. Under the rules, the government has kept such rich people out of the reservation list, and now these same people are raising questions on this. During the hearing, Justice Nagarathna took on those families who took advantage of reservation to reach higher positions themselves, but are also demanding quota for their next generation. He bluntly said that why are the children of students whose parents are in good jobs and earning high salaries asking for reservation again? Look, such people should immediately be shown a way out of the scope of reservation.
Rules should be set afresh for the next generation
The Supreme Court bench laid special emphasis on the fact that now the time has come when the rules of reservation should be reviewed. The court says that once a family has taken the benefit of reservation and reaches a strong level in terms of education and money, then there must be a re-evaluation of whether its next generation should get reservation or not. The judges said that it is very important to have a balance in the society. Admittedly, some sections are socially and educationally backward, but when the parents have achieved a big position in the society on the basis of reservation, the story changes. Along with this, the court also underlined the difference between the reservation given to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and socially backward communities.
