One of the perks of this summer’s expanded World Cup lineup of 48 teams is that football fans with an eye for style will have a record number of kits to admire and critique.
As always, the tournament will feature a variety of designs — from timeless classics to some more questionable choices — but one thing remains certain this year.
Nothing will ever match the visual impact of the flamboyant jerseys worn by former Mexico goalkeeper Jorge Campos during his 12-year international career.

Campos, celebrated as one of football’s most unconventional personalities, first captured global attention during the 1994 World Cup in the United States. His bright, self-designed kits stood out even more than the performances of the 5ft 7in shot-stopper himself.
“Yes, I began wearing brightly coloured jerseys because I grew up in Acapulco,” Campos tells FourFourTwo when asked about the origins of his distinctive style.
“I was a surfer there and loved expressing myself. I always wore vibrant colours because that was my personality and taste.
“So when I started playing as a goalkeeper, I wanted my shirts to reflect that same energy.”
This individuality, however, wasn’t just about his surfer background or fashion sense. Campos wanted his attire to highlight the unconventional way he approached the game itself.
“I played differently from everyone else, so I wanted my jersey to be different too. I experimented with new colours and started designing my own kits.”
Initially, his bold fashion choices drew criticism from teammates and coaches, but over time, others began to recognise the unique advantages of his approach.
“At first, everyone said I was mad,” he recalls. “They asked how I could play wearing so many colours — they said it was way too bright.
“Some coaches even claimed that my shirt was so luminous it made it easier for the opposition strikers to spot me. But I just loved those colours. I never wore them to distract or intimidate forwards or anything like that.
“Before that time, most goalkeepers stuck to plain grey or black uniforms.”
