Nowadays Bollywood stars do not want to be limited to just films. They are looking for new sources of their income. Along with acting, now he is also venturing into business. Especially in the field of skincare and beauty products, there is a plethora of celebrity brands. Actresses like Deepika Padukone, Kriti Sanon and Mira Kapoor have launched their own skincare brands and are also promoting them extensively on social media. But does a brand become successful just by being famous? Shark Tank India judge Shaili Mehrotra has recently given the answer to this question. Shelly herself owns a skincare brand, so she has a good understanding of this field.
In a special conversation on Soha Ali Khan’s YouTube channel, Shaili expressed her opinion openly. When he was asked about the skincare brands of Deepika Padukone, Kriti Sanon and Mira Kapoor, he clearly said, ‘I don’t think it is a good idea.’ Shaili further explained that about 15 years ago people used to buy products after seeing the faces and names of celebrities. But now times have changed. Today’s customer has become very aware and intelligent. People now read labels carefully instead of looking at the picture on the packet. They want to know what are the ingredients in the product, what is its formula and how effective it will be on their skin.
Customers just don’t see the star face
Shaili said, ‘The brand is associated with his name, perhaps a little bit may be sold in the beginning. But it is difficult to survive on name alone for a long time. Today consumers want to see the real performance of the product and not just the celebrity face. Soha Ali Khan asked whether people still buy products after watching celebrity advertisements? On this Shaili explained the difference depending on the cities. He said that celebrity effect still works in second and third tier cities. People there want to look like celebrities and hence may get attracted towards their brands. But the level of awareness is very high in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi. Here people focus on the quality of the product, ingredients and results. Referring to Mira Kapoor’s brand, Shaili said, ‘People will not buy it just because Mira is associated with it. If the product really performs well, only then people will buy it again and again.
