The political temperature has reached sky high due to power cut amid record breaking scorching heat and humidity in Uttar Pradesh. Amidst the uproar and uproar caused by undeclared power cuts in many districts of the state, Energy Minister of the state AK Sharma has made a direct and befitting reply on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. While giving advice to the SP chief in a very sarcastic manner, Minister AK Sharma said that Akhilesh ji, whenever you pick up the mirror, first look at yourself and then show it to others. Enraged by the allegations of the SP chief, the Energy Minister has issued a long reply on the social media platform X. In this reply, he has laid bare the entire story of the state’s electricity system, poor supply and terrible cuts during the rule of the SP government.

Actually, this whole controversy started when Akhilesh Yadav shared a very aggressive post on social media on Friday. In his post, Akhilesh had termed the situation in the state as a ‘major electricity disaster’ and held the BJP government, electricity minister and corrupt contractors directly responsible for it. While appealing to the public, Akhilesh had written that the public should not vent their anger on the junior employees of the electricity department or the poor linemen for the unbearable power crisis going on in Uttar Pradesh due to the wrong policies of the BJP. The SP chief further said that after thousands of contractual employees of the electricity department were laid off, they are already working under immense pressure. BJP MPs, MLAs, Mayors, Councilors, high officials of the electricity department and corrupt contractors are responsible for this crisis, who are directly or indirectly stakeholders in this failed government, hence questions and answers should also be asked to them only.

Energy Minister showed figures on Akhilesh’s allegations

After this sharp attack by Akhilesh Yadav, Energy Minister AK Sharma also did not remain silent. While writing a reply post on ‘X’, he said that the Samajwadi Party chief today sees the strong power system of Uttar Pradesh as very weak and sick. I would just like to say to them that whenever you pick up the mirror, first look at yourself and then show me. Citing figures, the minister cornered SP and said that at the end of their rule, i.e. between 2012 and 2017, the average peak demand for electricity in entire UP was only 13,000 megawatt (MW). Whereas if we look at the record of the last 4 years, this average has increased to 30,000 MW, which is almost two and a half times more than that of the SP government.

The Energy Minister claimed that in the last 4 years, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the number one state providing the highest peak power supply in the entire country, whereas in the earlier times UP used to crawl at the bottom position in this list. Today, almost twice as many consumers are being provided uninterrupted electricity as compared to 2017. While during the SP rule there were only 1.80 crore electricity customers, today under the BJP government this figure has crossed 3.70 crore customers.

The gap between the work of previous governments and the capacity of the present one

Talking about electricity infrastructure, AK Sharma said that the work which was not done in the 70 years after the country’s independence i.e. from 1947 to 2017, has been completed by our government. About 1.70 lakh majras left in limbo have been completely electrified by your regime. In the year 2017, the total capacity of big power sub-stations of the state was only 39,000 MVA, which increased at a record speed to 1 lakh MVA in the year 2022 and today in the year 2025-2026, this capacity has crossed 2 lakh MVA, i.e. 6 times more than during the time of SP.

Apart from this, the minister made a sharp attack and said that in the last 4 years, our government has replaced about 1.59 lakh kilometers long dilapidated and broken wires left by the SP government with new wires. Not only this, since your time, more than 30 lakh pillars hanging and breaking on the roads have been replaced with new pillars within just three years. As for sowing acacia in the system, the public has already decided on it. You had planted those acacia trees, which our government is now trying to destroy completely. Along with his statement, the minister also attached a graph showing the difference between electricity supply and consumption.

Mayawati also cornered the government on power crisis

Amidst this entire political turmoil, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati has also expressed deep concern about the ongoing power crisis and cuts in the state. Mayawati has also demanded the government to immediately take a permanent solution to this problem. He wrote on social media that in a state with a huge population like Uttar Pradesh, the general public is completely distressed due to low supply of electricity and unannounced cuts in this scorching and deadly summer season. Due to this, the poor, middle class, farmers, small traders as well as crores of hardworking people are facing a lot of problems. I strongly appeal to the government to immediately ensure necessary and concrete measures and try to improve the power supply system for the future by setting up new power plants.

Public anger descended on the streets of Lucknow

Amidst this severe and record breaking heat, electricity consumption in Uttar Pradesh has reached its historical and highest level. Tired of continuous tripping and long power cuts in many major cities of the state including the capital Lucknow, people took to the streets at midnight and created a ruckus outside the electricity offices. At present, the teams of the electricity department are working continuously to normalize the situation and updates are coming every moment on this entire incident.
