Manchester United are actively seeking to bolster their midfield options and are aiming to finalise a deal for Sandro Tonali.

The Red Devils are pressing ahead with their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford.

Newcastle United, also known as the Magpies, were eliminated from the Champions League at Camp Nou last night with an 8-3 aggregate loss. They currently occupy ninth place in the Premier League table, with their hopes of securing a return to Europe’s top competition fading as only eight fixtures remain this season.

According to reports from FourFourTwo, significant player exits could once again be on the horizon at St. James’ Park, following last summer’s record transfer of Alexander Isak. Manchester United are believed to be leading the race for Tonali, who has impressed with consistent performances in English football over the past two seasons.

Regardless of whether interim head coach Michael Carrick is appointed permanently, strengthening the midfield remains a key priority for United this summer.

Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence in central midfield has been one of the standout positives during Carrick’s tenure so far. However, with Casemiro expected to depart on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte struggling to make an impact since joining from Paris Saint-Germain, the 13-time Premier League champions are actively searching for another holding midfielder to complement their homegrown star.

New information from Christopher Michel of absolutfussball.de, shared by TEAMtalk, suggests that Manchester United are “seriously working on a move for Sandro Tonali” and that the Italian international is “quite open to a move to Manchester.”

TEAMtalk has also reported that both Manchester United and Arsenal are monitoring Tonali’s situation. However, FourFourTwo understands that Newcastle’s Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon are considered more serious targets for the North London club.

Ranked seventh in FourFourTwo’s list of the best defensive midfielders in the world, Tonali has developed into one of the finest players in his position over the last 18 months under Eddie Howe’s management.

Despite his progress, Newcastle’s stagnation this season has cast uncertainty over the futures of several key players. Although the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) will be replaced by a new system known as the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) next season, the Magpies may still need to make strategic sales to reinvest in their squad this summer.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have multiple areas to strengthen, including full-back positions, central midfield, and attacking depth. The appointment of a new manager is expected to be the most critical decision for owners INEOS in the upcoming months.

Newcastle are reportedly valuing Tonali, along with Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, at a minimum of £80 million each.

In response, Newcastle are believed to be exploring the possibility of re-signing Elliot Anderson to reinforce their midfield. The England international currently faces the threat of relegation with Nottingham Forest.

According to Transfermarkt, Tonali’s market value stands at €80 million. Manchester United will next face Bournemouth when Premier League action resumes this Friday night.
