Former Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has expressed his desire to see his old club make some vital reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window.

With Manchester United closing in on a place in next season’s Champions League, the Red Devils are already looking forward to a busy summer focused on strengthening key areas of their squad.

While most supporters are hoping for fresh additions in central midfield, there is also general agreement that other parts of the team require improvement. The managerial situation remains uncertain, with Michael Carrick continuing to impress since taking charge in February, but the club’s hierarchy has reportedly identified several potential transfer targets.

Pallister, who enjoyed a highly successful spell at Old Trafford winning four Premier League titles and three FA Cups, has shared his thoughts on who he believes should be on United’s shopping list.

“Midfield is still the area everyone keeps talking about,” Pallister told FourFourTwo on behalf of BetBrain. “I think someone like Sandro Tonali has the technical quality, creativity, and mental toughness to make a big impact at Old Trafford.”

“Casemiro is set to leave after a fantastic final season – and it wasn’t long ago that he faced plenty of criticism. Having a strong leader in the centre of the pitch will be crucial,” he added.

The former England defender believes Italian international Tonali, who has impressed in the Premier League since joining Newcastle United from AC Milan in 2021, possesses all the attributes required to step into Casemiro’s role when the Brazilian departs on a free transfer this summer.

“Tonali would give you many of the qualities Casemiro offers but with fresher and stronger legs,” explained Pallister, who also emphasised that the club needs improvements in other areas of the pitch.

He further noted, “Another centre forward would be a great addition as well. Benjamin Sesko has done reasonably well, but he hasn’t quite made a massive impact yet. He’s still developing, and bringing in a true Manchester United-style striker would be a huge boost for the team. Those are the two positions I’d focus on if I were at the club this summer.”
