How to Delink a Member ID in PF: The EPFO has introduced a significant change for salaried employees. It often happens that, due to an error on the part of a company, an incorrect Member ID gets linked to an employee's UAN; consequently, a company where the employee never actually worked begins to appear in their service history. Previously, the rule stipulated that only those incorrect Member IDs could be removed where no monetary contributions had been deposited. However, following a new circular issued on April 13, 2026, this rule has been revised. Employees can now request the removal of an incorrect Member ID from their UAN even if funds have been deposited into it by mistake. In other words, rectifying erroneous records has become easier than before, offering substantial relief to employees.
How Will This New Rule Work?
According to the EPFO, even if a small amount of money has been deposited into an incorrect Member ID linked to your account, you can now request its removal online. However, certain essential conditions have been laid down for this process. The primary condition is that contributions to that specific Member ID must not exceed a maximum of six instances. If contributions have been deposited more than six times, it is currently not possible to remove that ID online. The second condition pertains to the date of joining. If the joining date associated with the incorrect Member ID predates December 13, 2016—or if a claim has already been processed and settled against that specific ID—your request to delink it will not be accepted.
How to Delink an Incorrect Member ID from the Comfort of Your Home
You can now easily delink an incorrect ID from the comfort of your home. To do so, begin by visiting the EPFO Member Portal and logging in using your UAN and password. Once logged in, navigate to the 'View' menu located at the top of the homepage and select the 'Service History' option; this section will display all the Member IDs currently linked to your UAN. From this list, locate the specific incorrect ID you wish to remove and click on the 'Delink' button positioned next to it. The system will then verify your details; if your information is found to be in order, you will be prompted to select a reason for requesting the delinking. After providing the reason, tick the declaration box and click on 'Get OTP'. Then, enter the OTP received on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and submit it. As soon as the process is complete, a message will appear on the screen indicating that your de-linking request has been sent to the employer.
What if the Company Fails to Respond?
Upon submitting the OTP, your request is forwarded to the company that originally generated that Member ID. If contributions have been deposited into that ID fewer than two times, it will be immediately removed from your UAN as soon as the company grants its approval. However, if the company fails to respond within two weeks, rejects the request, or if contributions have been deposited into that ID between two and six times, the matter will be referred to the EPFO's Regional Office. There, officials will remove the erroneous Member ID after conducting an investigation.
