Bayern Munich’s sporting director Max Eberl has addressed the club’s summer transfer plans, providing clarity on rumours linking them with several Premier League stars. While the German champions are actively working to strengthen their attacking line-up with high-profile additions, one potential defensive signing has now been officially dismissed.
Eberl clarifies speculation around John Stones
Despite ongoing reports suggesting Manchester City defender John Stones could be heading to the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich have now made it clear that the England international is not among their targets. The 31-year-old, who will become a free agent this summer, was rumoured to be considering a reunion with former team-mate Vincent Kompany in Germany.
However, Eberl quickly put an end to that speculation when asked about the possibility of signing the experienced defender. Speaking to BILD, he stated plainly: “That is not true.” This indicates that Bayern are directing their focus and resources towards other areas as they prepare for a significant squad rebuild after a remarkable Bundesliga campaign.
Bayern open talks for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon
Although the Stones move is now off, Bayern remain strongly interested in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. The former Everton player is viewed as a prime target for the Bavarians, who want to add more pace and creativity to their attack. Eberl confirmed that discussions within the club are progressing positively as they attempt to finalise a deal.
Commenting on the pursuit, Eberl said: “We agree that we will sign an attacking player if he can be financed.” He also hinted at positive developments regarding the negotiations, adding: “We had a very good conversation [about Gordon] and hope that we can make progress.” Reports suggest that Gordon is keen on a move to the Allianz Arena after impressing in the Champions League, where he scored 10 goals in 12 matches, even though his domestic campaign was relatively modest.
Financial challenges in the Gordon deal
The main obstacle to completing the move appears to be Newcastle’s valuation of the 25-year-old forward. The Magpies are reportedly holding out for around £75 million (€86m), an amount that Bayern are currently unwilling to pay in full. The Bundesliga side hopes to negotiate a lower fee over the course of the transfer window. With Gordon still under a long-term contract at St James’ Park, Newcastle are in a strong negotiating position, but the player’s desire to take up a new challenge in Munich could influence the outcome.
Bayern keeping tabs on Bundesliga prospect Kennet Eichhorn
Alongside their pursuit of established names, Bayern are also monitoring emerging local talent, including Hertha BSC’s teenage sensation Kennet Eichhorn. The 16-year-old defensive midfielder has drawn attention following a standout season in the 2. Bundesliga, and his contract reportedly includes a €12 million release clause. Eberl acknowledged that overlooking such a promising player would be a mistake.
“I think if you see Kenny Eichhorn, and FC Bayern wouldn’t even consider it, then we wouldn't be doing our job,” Eberl said. “Now you have to see if that fits in and what his and his management’s vision are. Whether it actually happens is a completely different matter.”
With players like Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro expected to depart, Bayern’s long-term strategy continues to focus on blending experienced stars with emerging young talent as they look to build for the future.
