Manchester United set to outpace rivals in pursuit of Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United are growing increasingly optimistic about clinching the signing of West Ham United’s promising midfielder, Mateus Fernandes.

Following a number of encouraging talks, the Red Devils have emerged as the leading contenders to secure the 21-year-old’s signature this summer.

Fernandes, often described as the ‘complete Premier League midfielder’, has turned heads with his impressive performances this season despite West Ham’s struggles to avoid relegation.

Known for his aggressive play, ability to handle pressing situations, and composed passing, Fernandes has attracted attention from top European clubs looking to strengthen their midfields.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal have expressed strong interest in the Portuguese talent, but Manchester United are believed to be ahead in the race.

One major factor working in United’s favour is Fernandes’ potential link-up with his national team colleague and Red Devils captain, Bruno Fernandes, whom he greatly admires.

In addition to the appeal of teaming up with Bruno, United also benefit from inside connections in their recruitment setup. Kyle Macaulay, who previously served as West Ham’s head of recruitment and played a crucial role in signing Mateus Fernandes from Southampton for £40 million last summer, is now part of Manchester United’s backroom staff.

With the club actively seeking a long-term midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo — particularly as Casemiro approaches a likely free-agent exit — Fernandes appears to fit perfectly into United’s plans for the future.

West Ham are expected to demand a hefty transfer fee, potentially reaching £80 million, but their weakened position following a difficult league campaign could limit their bargaining power once the transfer window opens.

Given the player’s clear inclination towards a move to Old Trafford, Manchester United will be eager to finalise the deal early in the window.
