An American woman living in India has shared a video describing the differences between India and the United States in the use of air conditioners, highlighting how electricity costs and housing systems influence cooling habits in both countries.
In the video, she said air conditioners in India are generally used sparingly, with many households cooling only one room at a time. She added that AC units are often switched off when people leave the room in order to conserve electricity.
She noted that the cooling systems often continue operating even when residents leave for work or go on holidays.

She explained that heating is necessary during colder months to prevent water pipes from freezing.
One user commented, “Indians are no different. Just let the government reduce electricity bills and people will leave everything on, including AC and music.”
Another user disagreed with parts of the comparison and wrote, “Wrong on both accounts. In the US, AC or heating systems are kept running during holidays to avoid mould and frozen pipes depending on the season. In India, offices and commercial spaces also use centralized air-conditioning.”
A third user linked the issue to environmental concerns and said continuous power consumption reflected “wasteful consumption” that contributes to climate change.
Another commenter pointed out that centralized cooling is already common in India at malls, supermarkets and restaurants, adding that such systems are not unfamiliar in the country.

Central air systems common in US homes
Comparing the practice with the United States, the woman said most American homes rely on central air conditioning systems that cool the entire house. According to her, air conditioners in the US typically remain switched on throughout the summer season. She noted that the cooling systems often continue operating even when residents leave for work or go on holidays.

Thermostats maintain indoor temperatures
According to the woman, most Americans use thermostats to regulate indoor temperatures throughout the year. She said homes in the US are usually maintained at comfortable temperatures regardless of external weather conditions.Social media users reactions
The video prompted mixed reactions online, with several users debating electricity consumption, cooling systems and energy habits in both countries. One user commented, “Indians are no different.
