New Delhi, The Public Works Department has directed its officials to carpool and use public transport for project inspections, an official order said on Saturday.

PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has also ordered the cancellation of all foreign travel, whether in a personal or professional capacity, of officers, keeping in mind the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for energy security measures.

"No officer, official shall undertake any foreign visit, whether in a personal or official capacity, till further orders. All such proposals, if any, shall be dropped immediately, and any leave already sanctioned for foreign travel shall stand cancelled," the order said.

The PWD has further directed that during inspections, inaugurations and official events, "officers shall preferably travel together using electric vehicles, pooled vehicles and public transport."

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had earlier launched the 90-day 'Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan' fuel-saving campaign, which includes two-day work-from-home provisions for Delhi government employees and encourages greater use of public transport.

"Use of public transport and electric vehicles should be promoted. Also, the department should undertake speedy electrification of its vehicle fleet," the order further said.

The PWD has also ordered its horticulture wing to only use organic manure in all its horticulture projects.

To facilitate generating organic manure, PWD also plans to expedite the setting up of more green waste processing plants.
