Liverpool is on the verge of completing the signing of one of South America's brightest young prospects as part of their continued efforts to strengthen their midfield for the future. The Merseyside club has reportedly beaten several top European teams to secure the signature of a highly rated Colombian playmaker.
Colombian starlet bound for Anfield
The Reds have moved swiftly to finalise a deal for Colombian sensation Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has become one of the most in-demand teenagers in global football after delivering a string of impressive performances on the international stage.
The deal, reportedly valued at around £740,000, highlights Liverpool’s growing focus on identifying elite youth talent from markets across the world. Martinez first caught the attention of Liverpool’s scouts during the South American U17 Championship, where he played a key role in Colombia’s title-winning campaign, starting in five of their six matches and providing three crucial assists.
Beating top clubs to his signing
While Liverpool seems to have secured the youngster’s services, competition was fierce. Borussia Dortmund from Germany and Spanish giants Barcelona were also keen on signing the midfielder. However, the prospect of playing at Anfield and competing in the Premier League ultimately convinced Martinez to choose Liverpool.
According to reports from Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Paul Joyce, and The Athletic, Martinez will sign a five-year contract with the Reds. The agreement also includes a sell-on clause for Atletico Nacional, ensuring that the Colombian club benefits financially from any future transfer should Martinez realise his potential in Europe.
Arrival expected in summer 2027
Although the agreement is already in place, Liverpool supporters will have to wait a little longer to see Martinez in action. Due to FIFA regulations on international transfers involving players under 18, the move will only be officially completed once Martinez turns 18 next year. As a result, his official arrival at Anfield is expected in the summer of 2027.
In the meantime, the right-footed midfielder will continue his development with Atletico Nacional, where he currently plays for their U20 side. This period will allow him to further enhance his physicality and tactical understanding, crucial attributes for success in English football.
Liverpool’s evolving recruitment approach
Martinez’s acquisition is a reflection of Liverpool’s evolving global recruitment strategy. Under the current setup, the club has increasingly shifted its focus from traditional European markets to emerging football regions in South America and Africa. This approach mirrors their recent moves for Senegalese youngsters Mor Talla Ndiaye and the closely linked Sidy Barhama Ndiaye.
Once Martinez completes his move to Merseyside, he is expected to join Liverpool’s Under-18 squad and adapt gradually to the English style of play. He will become part of a promising youth setup that already includes talents like Erik Farkas and AJ Yeguo, as Liverpool continues to build a strong foundation of young players capable of breaking into the first team in the coming years.
