Former PSG and Celtic forward reveals admirable reason for declining World Cup opportunity

Odsonne Edouard has shed light on his decision to turn down a guaranteed place at the upcoming World Cup finals. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Celtic striker was given the opportunity to represent Haiti on football’s biggest stage but chose to refuse the offer for reasons rooted in integrity and fairness.

Rejecting the call-up

At a time when many players change national allegiance to secure participation in major international competitions, Edouard has opted for a more honourable route. The Lens forward, who enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Celtic with four Scottish Premiership titles, was approached by Haiti to lead their attack in the United States this summer.

Although eligible to play for the Caribbean nation, Edouard believed accepting the invitation would be unjust to the players who earned qualification. The French-born striker, who represented France at various youth levels, explained: “No, I didn’t feel legitimate playing in this World Cup because the players fought to qualify and I wasn’t going to show up at the last minute to take advantage of this World Cup. If I’m going to play in it, I have to earn it.”

Honouring the journey

The 2026 World Cup stands as a historic moment for Haiti, who have been placed in a challenging Group C alongside Scotland, Brazil, and Morocco. Yet Edouard placed the integrity of the team and the spirit within the dressing room above his personal ambition of appearing in football’s most prestigious tournament.

His decision is a rare instance of humility in the modern era of football. Despite the tempting prospect of facing world giants like Brazil and Scotland in Miami, Edouard remained resolute that joining Haiti now would unfairly replace a player who had contributed throughout the qualifying stages. Haiti's qualification marks only their second appearance in World Cup history—the first being in 1974, when their campaign ended in the group stage after three defeats.

Future international hopes

While Edouard has shown great respect towards Haiti, he also made it clear that his dream of representing France at senior level is still alive. Having been a key player for Les Bleus at the Under-21 level, the former Celtic star continues to hope for a future call-up to the French national team.

Accepting Haiti’s offer would have permanently tied his international career to the Caribbean side, closing the door on any future chance with France. At club level, Edouard has enjoyed an impressive season, scoring 14 goals in 36 matches across all competitions. He played a crucial role in Lens’ first-ever Coupe de France triumph—scoring in their 3-1 win over Nice in the final—and helped them finish second in Ligue 1, securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Haiti’s World Cup preparation

Even without Edouard, Haiti will field attacking quality from the English leagues. Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor has been named in the squad after an impressive season with the Black Cats, and he is expected to be a major threat when Haiti begin their campaign against Steve Clarke’s Scotland on June 14.
