Pakistan: Suicide attack targeting train in Quetta, 23 people killed in massive blast

Islamabad. A suicide bomber of the Majid Brigade of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) carried out a massive suicide attack targeting the Jafar Express train carrying military personnel from Quetta Cantt near Chaman Gate in Quetta, Pakistan on Sunday morning. In this powerful explosion that took place near the railway track, at least 23 people died on the spot and 53 others were seriously injured.

Due to the blast, a bogie of the passenger train was completely burnt to ashes, while many houses and vehicles located around the track also suffered heavy damage. As soon as information about the incident was received, local people and police officers immediately gathered at the incident site and started relief and rescue operations. Security forces have cordoned off the entire affected area and the injured were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital, where the condition of many remains critical. The spokesperson of Baloch Liberation Army issued a statement to the media and took responsibility for this suicide attack.

    According to BLA spokesperson Jiyand Baloch, the organization’s suicide attack unit ‘Majeed Brigade’ has carried out this attack. This train was carrying Pakistani Army soldiers from Quetta Cantt, which was targeted by the blast. Detailed information to this operation, as well as the losses suffered by the enemy as a result of the attack, will be informed to the media in an official statement soon.

    ‘A bogie burnt to ashes’

    According to Quetta Police, the explosion that took place near Chaman Gate was so severe that an entire bogie of Jafar Express was engulfed in flames and completely reduced to ashes. The walls of many residential houses built around the railway track collapsed and the vehicles parked there were also completely damaged due to the blast.

    The death toll may increase

    Immediately after the blast, there was chaos in the entire area. Top police officers and local residents immediately reached the spot and are pulling out the victims from the debris and burning bogie. Police said that 53 people injured in this accident have been admitted to nearby hospitals, the condition of many of them is very critical.

    According to initial investigation, this was a well-planned attack, which was carried out at the time of passing of the train so that maximum loss of life and property could be caused. Along with carrying out relief work on the spot, emergency rescue teams and police forces are busy searching for the exact cause of the blast and clues about the suicide bomber.
