A dramatic incident unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening when a 21-year-old man identified as Nasire Best opened fire on Secret Service agents, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, the suspect pulled a weapon from his bag around 6:00 PM local time (23:00 GMT) near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. He began firing at agents, who returned fire and struck him. Best was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No Secret Service agents were injured in the incident. However, a bystander was reportedly hit by gunfire. Details about the bystander’s condition have not yet been released.

Former President Donald Trump quickly addressed the incident, stating:

Suspect Had Previous White House Incident

CBS News reported that the suspect, Nasire Bestwas already known to the Secret Service. In July 2025, Best was arrested after attempting to breach White House security. He was subsequently sent to a psychiatric facility for evaluation and treatment.

Journalists working inside the White House were forced to take cover as gunfire erupted in the surrounding streets, creating moments of panic in one of America’s most secure areas.

The Secret Service issued an official statement confirming that agents acted swiftly to neutralize the threat. The agency continues to investigate the full circumstances of the attack, including how the suspect obtained the firearm and any potential motives.
