Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has made a firm declaration ahead of the final day of the Premier League season, confirming that he plans to continue at the club even if they drop down to the Championship. The Italian manager, who took charge in March during a turbulent phase, now faces a crucial survival showdown against Everton on Sunday.
De Zerbi reaffirms long-term commitment to Spurs
Despite the looming danger of relegation, De Zerbi has moved to dispel rumours about his potential exit from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The former Brighton and Hove Albion boss signed an extensive five-year contract when he succeeded interim coach Igor Tudor, and he remains intent on fulfilling that agreement regardless of the club’s position in the league standings.
Addressing the media in his pre-match press conference, the Italian tactician was asked if he would stay with the team should the worst occur. Displaying confidence and loyalty, he responded: “Yes, I confirm everything. For me, it’s still an honour to be a coach for Tottenham. Even if on Sunday we play for the relegation fight, it’s not a problem. I consider football something more than the table, than the level of the game.”
Spurs’ fight for survival reaches its peak
The mood in north London is tense as the season nears its conclusion. Tottenham currently sit two points above the relegation zone, aware that only a win against Everton will secure their Premier League status. A slip-up could open the door for West Ham United to overtake them and push Spurs into 18th place, ending their long spell in the top division.
De Zerbi, however, insists that he was fully aware of the challenge when he joined the club towards the end of March. “I didn't come here in midtable,” he said. “The situation was this, more games but not too different a situation. If I came it was because I thought there are the right conditions, the right qualities and players to achieve the target.”
De Zerbi’s perspective goes beyond league standings
For De Zerbi, his coaching philosophy reflects a deeper commitment to the project rather than the prestige of the competition. By asserting that football is “more than the table,” he has struck a chord with supporters who crave stability after a turbulent period. It’s a bold message from a coach who continues to attract high regard across Europe.
Whether Tottenham remain in the Premier League or face life in the Championship, De Zerbi insists that neither West Ham’s results nor the final league table will alter his stance. “Upon signing a five-year deal, I insisted I would be at the club ‘no matter what’ next season,” he emphasised once again.
All eyes on the decisive clash against Everton
As Tottenham prepare for their high-stakes match against Everton, De Zerbi has called for full concentration, even claiming that the pressure of this fixture exceeds that of a major European final. Having lifted the Europa League trophy in Bilbao last year, the contrast between that triumph and his current challenge in north London is significant.
“It’s easier to play the final of Europa League than to play Tottenham vs Everton, 100 per cent. As a pressure it’s totally different, but if we win this game there is another pride, another emotion, another feeling,” De Zerbi concluded.
