Manchester United concluded their Premier League season in style, defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 away from home on Sunday.
Bruno Fernandes once again took centre stage, providing the assist for Patrick Dorgu’s opening goal before the Danish youngster returned the favour to set up his captain in the second half.
With one goal and his record-setting 21st assist of the league campaign, Michael Carrick could hardly have wished for a better performance from his midfield leader.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, the 31-year-old was asked how it felt to surpass Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry on the all-time Premier League assist chart.
The Manchester United skipper was quick to acknowledge that it was his current teammates who helped him achieve the record, emphasising that his own creativity levels have remained consistent throughout his career.
“It’s great to break the assists record. I feel very happy about it. It’s a very proud moment — it’s not something I ever dreamed of or thought about until I got close,” he said.
“It was already special to be mentioned alongside Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. We’re talking about two players who helped make the Premier League what it is today. They are two of the best the league has ever seen.”
He continued, “My playing style hasn’t really changed. I’ve always focused on creating chances. The main difference this season is my teammates have finished those chances better than before, and I’ve received the credit for it.”
This was also the Portuguese star’s 11th assist from a set-piece this season. He revealed that the team had worked on the specific routine under the guidance of Jonny Evans, who has taken charge of set-piece training.
“Today I was lucky to get that assist. Jonny Evans believed more than I did in the set-piece we designed for Patrick. I wasn’t completely sure he would score with his head,” Fernandes admitted. “I got my assist, but the most important thing is that we won and finished the season strongly.”
Fans will be thrilled not only with Bruno Fernandes’ leadership but also with the impact of newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick, whose arrival has sparked a remarkable turnaround following Ruben Amorim’s departure.
United finished the campaign as the Premier League’s most in-form side, and Fernandes praised INEOS for making what he described as a smart decision in giving Carrick the managerial role on a permanent basis.
“It’s a very important step for our club. We need stability in management, and since Michael came in, everyone has seen how calm he is. He brings a sense of calm to the team but also knows when to put pressure on us,” Fernandes said.
“He understands what this club means and what it demands. We’re very excited about what’s ahead. We finished the season strongly, and that’s a positive sign for the future.”
Supporters will be hoping that Manchester United can carry this momentum into the new season, as anticipation builds for the next Premier League campaign.
