Making a major success in increasing the domestic energy production in the country, Maharatna public sector company Oil India Limited (OIL) has discovered new natural gas reserves in the Dandewala Field located in the Jaisalmer Basin of Rajasthan. The company said that for the first time in this area, successful flow of natural gas has started from the shallow Sanu Formation.

According to the official statement issued by Oil India, this new well, drilled to a depth of about 950 meters, recorded an average natural gas flow of 25,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) during testing. The company has described this as an important but early stage major achievement.

The company said preliminary estimates based on structural mapping, petrophysical assessment and sub-surface analysis indicate gas-in-place (GIP) resources of approximately 75 million standard cubic meters (MMSCM). This is believed to be the first successful evidence of the presence of hydrocarbons in the Sanu Formation within the Dandewala Field.

“This is the first successful establishment of gas presence in the shallow Sanu formation within the Dandewala field, opening up new potential areas and strengthening our technical strategy under the ‘missed opportunities’ approach,” Oil India said in a statement. The company further said that this discovery will create new possibilities for future evaluation and production expansion.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri congratulated the Oil India team on this achievement. He wrote on social media platform

The minister further said that this achievement is an important step towards making the country self-reliant in the energy sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also appreciated the tenacity, technical excellence and unwavering commitment of the Oil India team.

The discovery comes at a time when India still meets about 50 percent of its natural gas needs through LNG imports. The current natural gas consumption in the country is about 187 million standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD). Although the initial production from this new well is limited compared to the total demand, experts see it as a potential for major production expansion in the future.

In view of the increasing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and dependence on strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz, it is considered extremely important for India to increase domestic energy production. In such a situation, this new gas discovery in Dandewala field can not only help in reducing the import bill but can also strengthen the energy security of the country.
