It was four in a row for 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli as he continued his purple patch in the Formula One on Sunday (May 25) with another win. Racing in the Canadian Grand Prix, Antonelli followed his latest win, having won in China, Japan and Miami. The win also meant that Mercedes maintained its perfect run as they have now won all five races this Formula One season.
Antonelli continues stellar run
Antonelli has extended his lead in the world championship to 43 points following the retirement of his Mercedes teammate and closest rival, George Russell, who was sidelined by a power unit failure. Reflecting on his remarkable run, the 19-year-old—who became the first driver to secure his maiden four Grand Prix victories in consecutive races—stated, “We are going to keep raising that bar.” After Russell’s season-opening win in Australia, Antonelli has dominated, clinching victories in China, Japan, Miami, and now Montreal.
Lewis Hamilton delivered his strongest performance since joining Ferrari, securing an impressive second-place finish, while Max Verstappen earned his first podium of the season for Red Bull in third.
It was a difficult afternoon for defending champion Lando Norris. After an explosive start that saw him seize the lead, his race unraveled due to a series of tire issues that forced multiple early pit stops. His day ended prematurely on lap 39 when he was forced to retire due to a suspected gearbox failure. Rounding out the top five, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed fourth, and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished fifth despite serving a 10-second time penalty.
George Russell left devastated
In what was supposed to be a clean sweep of points for British driver Russell, it proved to be a heartbreaking Sunday afternoon at the Canadian Grand Prix. Having dominated a fantastic Saturday where he won the Sprint Race and secured pole position, Russell had to exit early on Sunday. It was reported that a power unit failure caused Russell to retire his car early, leaving him devastated while the camera rolled in.
On the 31st lap of the Canadian GP, Russell witnessed a power unit failure, meaning he had to retire. This came after he and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli were going neck-to-neck for P1. However, the power unit failure meant that a Safety Car was brought in while an angry Russell left in frustration.
