Heat Wave Alert: From today the Sun has entered Rohini Nakshatra. Due to this, there is going to be severe heat on the earth for the next 9 days. This is called Nautapa. The daily temperature in Nautpe is recorded between 45 to 48 degrees. This much temperature is not only dangerous for the human body but can also prove fatal. This also affects the heart and heartbeats. Due to increase in temperature and humidity in summer, the heartbeat of many people starts increasing, some feel problems like fluttering in the chest, missing heartbeat or heart beating loudly.

Often people ignore it as nervousness or general fatigue, but according to health experts, there can be a deep connection between heatwaves and increased heartbeats (Palpitations). Let us understand about this in this article.

Why does the heart beat faster in summer?

Actually, the human body constantly tries to keep its temperature balanced. When the weather is very hot, the body expands the blood vessels near the skin to keep itself cool so that the body heat can escape. In this process, our heart has to work faster so that blood circulation can increase and the body can remain cool. This puts more pressure on the heart and people start feeling the heartbeat faster than normal. Some people feel that their heart is racing fast, there is vibration in the chest or the heartbeats have become irregular.

Dehydration also increases the risk

There is excessive sweating in summer, due to which the body loses water as well as essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium. These essential elements play an important role in maintaining normal heartbeat. When there is lack of water in the body, blood pressure also starts decreasing and the heart has to work harder to pump blood. This causes rapid heartbeat, weakness, dizziness or nervousness.

Which people have more problems?

According to Dr. LK Jha, Associate Director and Head Unit-II- Cardiology Department of Asian Hospital, some health conditions can increase the risk of palpitations even in summer, such as anxiety or stress, thyroid problem, anemia, diabetes or pre-existing heart disease. Apart from this, some medicines like blood pressure medicine, diuretics (medicines that increase urination), asthma inhalers can also cause increased heartbeat in hot weather. Consuming excessive tea, coffee, energy drinks or caffeine in summer can also increase the problem.

Hot nights and poor sleep also cause

Not getting proper sleep at night during the summer season can also affect the heartbeat. Such as lack of sleep, fatigue and heat stress increase the levels of stress hormones in the body, which can cause a fast heartbeat or fluttering in the chest.

When is the situation normal and when is it dangerous?

According to doctors, it is not uncommon for normally healthy people to have occasional mild palpitations due to heat. In such a situation, the person is advised to take rest, cool place and adequate fluids. Experts advise that one should drink water regularly in summer and consume coconut water, buttermilk, lemonade or ORS to compensate for the deficiency of electrolytes. Avoid prolonged exposure to bright sunlight and limit caffeine and alcohol intake. However, if the heartbeat increases frequently or some serious symptoms appear along with it, then you should immediately seek medical advice.

Consult a doctor immediately if these symptoms occur

If these problems occur along with palpitations, medical advice should be sought immediately.

  • Chest pain
  • breathlessness
  • fainting or dizziness
