IPL 2026 Orange Cap Race: The league stage of IPL 2026 has ended and now the tournament has reached the exciting threshold of playoffs. Four teams have secured their places for the final stage, but at the same time the battle of individual performance has now reached an interesting turn. The most talked about player is the one who scores the most runs in the entire season and wins the coveted Orange Cap at the end of the season.

At present, Gujarat Titans’ star batsman Sai Sudarshan is leading in the race for Orange Cap. He has scored 638 runs in 14 matches of the league stage. Behind him is his captain Shubhman Gill, who has added 616 runs. In third place is Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who has scored 606 runs so far while batting brilliantly.

Dominance of those who score consecutive runs in the top-10

If we look at this season’s Orange Cap race, one thing is clearly visible – not just big innings, but consistent performance matters more.

Many players included in the top-10 batsmen definitely scored centuries, but more important than that was their continuous scoring of runs. Some players scored several half-centuries along with one century and made regular contributions to the team throughout the season.

Batsmen like KL Rahul, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Virat Kohli kept themselves in the top list by scoring runs consistently.

Why did Sanju Samson lag behind despite scoring two centuries?

The most surprising name in this list is that of Sanju Samson. Chennai Super Kings batsman Sanju is the only player to score two centuries (vs MI and DC) this season, but despite this he could not make it to the top-10 list of Orange Cap.

Sanju’s performance this season was up and down in terms of statistics, but was impressive. He scored 477 runs in 14 matches and scored two centuries.

Sanju played match-winning innings in some matches, like a brilliant century of 115* runs against Delhi Capitals and 101* runs against Mumbai Indians. In both these innings, he presented an excellent example of aggressive batting and showed his ability to hit big shots. His strike rate was quite impressive throughout the season, indicating that he scored runs at a fast pace.

However, on the other hand, he failed to play big innings in many matches. Small innings like 0 runs against GT, 11 runs against MI, 7 runs against PBKS and just 6 runs against RR became his weakness. Due to lack of big innings consistently, his total runs could not reach the expected level.

Overall, Sanju’s season was a mix of explosive batting and inconsistent performances. He showed that he can single-handedly change the course of a match, but if consistency remained then he could have been among the top contenders in the race for the Orange Cap.

The battle for the Orange Cap is still pending

Although the league stage has ended, the playoff matches are still pending. In such a situation, players like Sai Sudarshan, Shubman Gill and Heinrich Klaasen will have a chance to further improve their statistics. Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ishaan Kishan, who are full of young talent, are also not far behind.

The beauty of cricket is that a brilliant century can definitely make headlines, but in the long race, only that player comes forward who keeps adding runs for the team in every match. The story of Sanju Samson has also emerged as the biggest example of this.
