Sitapur. Litchi with small seeds and more pulp, produced in Mahmudabad tehsil of Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh, will become a center of special attraction in the markets of Lucknow and surrounding districts this time. There is enthusiasm among traders about the litchi crop of local gardeners and fruit sellers of Lucknow have already started purchasing from farmers. District Horticulture Officer Rajshree said on Monday that the gardeners of Mahmudabad area are continuously progressing in litchi production and their produce is getting good response from the markets of Lucknow.
good demand in the market
Due to this, the income of farmers is also increasing significantly. He told that litchi gardening is done on a large scale in Mira Nagar, Thakurpur, Saidpur and surrounding villages. Here, advanced varieties like Shahi Rose, Center Bedana, Early Bedana, China, Calcutta and Kashmir are being cultivated, which have good demand in the market. Deputy Agriculture Director Shravan Kumar Singh said that the specialty of litchi in Mahmudabad area is that the horticulture here is mainly done in organic way.
proving to be a profitable cash crop
There is very little use of chemical pesticides in plantations and farmers use solutions prepared from neem leaves. Due to this the quality and taste of litchi remains better. He told that on an average 50 to 80 kg of fruits are obtained from one litchi tree and about 150 trees are planted in one hectare. Farmers get good income from this and it is proving to be a profitable cash crop for the area.
Agricultural scientist Dayashankar Srivastava said that the biggest advantage of litchi of Mahmudabad is that due to its proximity to the fruit market of Lucknow, farmers have convenience in transportation and the risk of fruits getting spoiled is also less. He said that after about a week the litchi from here will start reaching Lucknow market in large quantities.
Describing the history of litchi production, officials said that during the reign of Mahmudabad princely state, King Mahmudabad used to order special “Calcatiya” litchi from Muzaffarpur in Bihar for his guests. In view of the problem of spoilage of fruits in summer, litchi orchards were later planted in Mahmudabad itself, after which the tradition of litchi production started here and today this area has created its own identity in the state.
