Mumbai: The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a non-cooperation directive (NCD) against actor Ranveer Singh over his alleged last-minute withdrawal from Don 3, escalating a dispute around one of Bollywood’s most anticipated films.
In a press release, FWICE said it had taken cognisance of a complaint forwarded by the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), alleging that Singh abruptly exited the project directed by Farhan Akhtar.
According to FWICE, the complaint was filed by Akhtar before IFTDA on April 11, after which the matter was referred to the federation for further action. The body said it held meetings with concerned parties, including Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani, to examine the issue.
FWICE claimed that Akhtar and Sidhwani informed the federation that around Rs 45 crore had already been spent on the film’s pre-production and warned that Singh’s sudden withdrawal at an advanced stage could expose the project to major financial losses and disrupt execution.
The federation said it sent multiple communications to Singh, including reminders dated April 22, April 30 and May 13, requesting him to appear before the body and present his side. However, FWICE said Singh, through his representatives, responded that the federation was not the appropriate forum for what he viewed as a contractual dispute and that the matter should instead be resolved through legal channels.
“Considering the conduct displayed towards the Federation and the stakeholders associated with the project, the office bearers of FWICE have resolved to issue a Non-Cooperation Directive (NCD) against Mr. Ranveer Singh,” the statement said.
Responding to the development, Singh’s official spokesperson said the actor had deliberately maintained silence amid speculation around Don 3.
“Ranveer Singh holds the highest regard for the film fraternity and for everyone associated with the Don franchise. Throughout the recent developments surrounding Don 3, he has consciously chosen to maintain silence, believing that professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity and mutual respect,” the spokesperson said.
“While several narratives and speculations have surfaced over time, Ranveer has never considered it necessary to respond publicly or contribute to conjecture. His focus remains firmly on his work and the commitments ahead.”
The spokesperson added that Singh “continues to hold deep respect and goodwill for all those involved and sincerely wishes the franchise continued success,” adding that “choosing restraint and grace in moments like these has always been a conscious decision on his part”.
FWICE, meanwhile, said it remained open to hearing Singh’s side in an effort to arrive at an amicable resolution and urged producers’ bodies and industry stakeholders to discourage what it described as “unprofessional practices”.
