NEW YORK (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 7-2 on Monday, marking Nick Lodolo's first win of the season after returning from a blister injury.
The victory extended the Mets' losing streak to four games. Mets outfielder Juan Soto missed his second consecutive game due to illness, while Tyrone Taylor exited the game with right hip pain. Taylor is expected to undergo an MRI and may be placed on the injured list, according to manager Carlos Mendoza.
Mets' Struggles Continue
The Mets have struggled offensively during their current losing streak, scoring only four runs and striking out 41 times. Their record now stands at 22-32, nearing their season low of 11 games under .500, which was 10-21 earlier this season. Last season, the Mets had a strong start at 45-24 by June 13, but they have since recorded a disappointing 60-87 record.
Reds' Performance Highlights
Spencer Steer contributed significantly to the Reds' win, driving in three runs. The Reds, who secured a playoff spot against the Mets on the final day of the 2025 season, started the current year strong at 20-11 but have struggled with an 8-14 record since.
Pitching Analysis
Lodolo (1-1) delivered an impressive performance, allowing only one run and six hits while striking out seven batters without issuing any walks, lowering his ERA from 7.20 to 5.57. He had previously been sidelined due to a blister on his left index finger. Mets pitcher Nolan McLean (2-4) faced challenges, surrendering seven runs on five hits, two walks, and two hit batters in just 3 1/3 innings, marking the shortest outing of his 19 big league starts. His ERA has risen from 2.92 to 4.40 following this game.
Game Highlights
The Reds established an early lead, going up 2-0 in the second inning after a run-scoring wild pitch from McLean and a forceout by Steer. Bleday hit a home run in the third inning, followed by a two-run single from Steer and a two-run homer from Tyler Stephenson, extending the Reds' lead to 7-0 by the fourth inning. Marcus Semien homered for the Mets in the sixth inning, marking his first time batting cleanup this season. Additionally, Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz recorded his first four-strikeout game of the year.
Looking Ahead
The Reds are set to face off against Mets left-handed pitcher David Peterson (3-4, 5.03) on Tuesday night, with Chase Burns (6-1, 1.83 ERA) taking the mound for Cincinnati.
