Heart attack is such a word that people get scared just by hearing it. Heart attack sometimes comes without any warning, but if some of its common symptoms are identified in time, the patient’s life can be saved. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns people about heart attacks and also gives information about the symptoms.

According to experts, symptoms of attack may vary from person to person, but there are some signs which should never be ignored. The main symptoms of heart attack are feeling of chest pain, stiffness, pressure or discomfort. This pain may spread to the arms, left shoulder, elbow, jaw, neck or back. Along with this, difficulty in breathing or sudden shortness of breath. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort also occur.

Apart from this, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, sudden cold sweat without any exertion and gradual turning pale of the entire body including the face. These symptoms are sometimes less pronounced in women and the elderly, so it is important to remain alert. If any of these symptoms persist for more than 5 minutes, immediately inform the doctor or call the emergency number.

Prevention from heart attack is possible if some necessary changes are made in the daily routine. The most important thing is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercise for at least 30 minutes daily. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming or yoga are very beneficial. Eat a healthy diet.

Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses and low-fat food. Avoid fried, excessive salt, sugar and processed foods. Quit smoking completely as it is the biggest threat to the heart. Limit alcohol consumption also. Keep your weight under control, get your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked regularly. Do meditation and pranayam to reduce stress. Along with this, also get good sleep.

Health experts say not to panic if a heart attack occurs. Make the patient lie down in a comfortable position, loosen tight clothing and seek medical help immediately. Aspirin tablets can be given by chewing (as per doctor’s advice). Heart attack cases are increasing rapidly in India. Therefore, every person above 30 years of age should get regular health checkups done.
