Twisha Sharma death: CBI re-registers FIR, launches fresh investigation

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken charge of the probe into the alleged dowry death of 32-year-old actor-model Twisha Sharma. After receiving the case records from local police, the agency re-registered the FIR and will now carry out an independent investigation into the matter.

The case has drawn national attention amid allegations of investigative lapses and calls for a thorough and impartial inquiry.

On Monday, the Supreme Court heard a suo motu case related to Sharma’s death at her matrimonial home in Madhya Pradesh. The proceedings came amidst claims of institutional bias, procedural discrepancies and shortcomings in the initial investigation.

During the hearing, the bench expressed concern over the manner in which certain developments had unfolded and urged restraint in media coverage.

The court said, “We are slightly in pain because of some of the actions. We will request our media friends not to go for the statements of the victim’s family or the other family. Let the things move as per law and procedure.”

The court also appealed to journalists to avoid turning the family’s grief into public spectacle.

“We request the media not to record statements of the victim’s family and reduce their pain to sound bites,” the bench said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that the CBI would assume responsibility for the investigation and assured the bench that all necessary administrative formalities would be completed on the same day.

With the CBI now taking over the Twisha Sharma death case, a fresh examination of the evidence and circumstances surrounding Sharma’s death is expected to follow.
