WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging app, has been offering end-to-end encryption for some time. Its purpose is to keep the chat private. However, a recent report suggests that the messaging platform is working on a new feature, “spoiler messages”, to give WhatsApp messages an extra layer of privacy.
A video shared by WABetaInfo on X shows a new WhatsApp feature that can hide messages behind a blurred layer. This feature can be especially useful for those who send sensitive information, OTP, or any data that is not required to be displayed immediately.
How WhatsApp spoiler message feature works
To use this spoiler message feature, all you need to do is type a message or paste it into the text bar. Then, by long pressing, select the text. Once the text is selected, you will see options like Translate, Cut, Copy and Select All. Apart from all these options, there will be three dots. After clicking on the three dots, several options will pop up in a vertical list along with the write option, such as Share, Undo, Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Monospace, Spoiler, and Manage Apps. Click on the spoiler option and then just send the message. If WhatsApp rolls out this feature in the coming days — which is reportedly still in the testing phase — you’ll notice that your message is sent behind a blur layer.
When the message arrives on the recipient’s device, it will appear as blurred text. To make the text visible, the recipient must tap on it. This feature is for those who want to share the message, and do not want to reveal the details immediately.
Spoiler message support extended to videos and images
The purpose of the spoiler message feature is to reduce accidental spoilers. In group chats, you can reportedly use this feature even if you don’t want everyone to see the same information at the same time. The report suggests that it will be compatible with text messages and media captions.
As of now, this feature is reportedly in the testing phase. Beta testers will be able to use this feature soon, and if it is successful in rolling out soon, as WABetaInfo has hinted, it may also support photo and video content.
