Manchester United had one of their loan players in action last night, and he played a decisive role for his temporary club.
Jacob Devaney has been one of United’s standout loan performers this season. The young Irish midfielder joined St Mirren in January and has since become an integral part of their campaign.
Over the course of the season, Devaney has made 18 appearances for the Scottish side, scoring once in cup competition. What makes his contribution even more impressive is that, at just 18 years old, he has held his own in the physically demanding midfield contests of the Scottish Premiership.
Among his best displays came in a challenging away fixture against Celtic at the intimidating Celtic Park, a performance that reflected the composure and mental resilience needed to succeed eventually at Old Trafford.
His growing importance to the St Mirren setup was evident as he featured for the full 90 minutes in both legs of the relegation playoff against Partick Thistle. The Saints drew the first leg 1-1 away and followed it up with a crucial 1-0 home victory last night, ensuring their place in the Scottish Premiership for another season.
BBC journalist Simon Stone shared his thoughts on X, noting, “Jacob Devaney completed the full 90 minutes as St Mirren preserved their Scottish Premiership status tonight. Man United youngster has had an outstanding loan.”
Although neither Devaney nor St Mirren delivered their most fluid football in a tense affair, their determination and discipline were enough to secure a priceless result.
The young midfielder is expected to return to Carrington this summer to join Manchester United’s first team for their pre-season training and European tour. After that, the club will decide whether he will remain to compete for a first-team spot or continue his development with another loan spell—potentially back at St Mirren or elsewhere.
