In New Delhi on Tuesday, the foreign ministers of India, US, Australia and Japan issued a joint statement on strengthening energy security in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad countries believe that any disruption in the global energy market has the greatest impact on the Indo-Pacific region, hence it is important to give priority to the energy security of this region.
The statement said that the four countries will work together to make the energy market stable, transparent and reliable. Along with this, emphasis has also been laid on strengthening and diversifying the supply chain of oil, gas and other essential resources, so that dependence on any one source can be reduced.
This group has also described the security of maritime trade routes as important. This includes ensuring that the movement of ships around the world, including through the Strait of Hormuz, continues unhindered so that global trade can continue as normal. Emphasis has been placed on maintaining free and safe navigation, particularly on vital sea routes.
Special emphasis has been laid on taking into account the energy needs of small island and developing countries. These countries believe that they are more vulnerable to the energy crisis. Quad countries will cooperate to meet the energy needs of each other and regional partners in emergency situations.
According to the statement, various initiatives going on at the regional level are playing an important role in strengthening energy and resource security. These include Japan’s POWRR initiative, which aims to make energy and resource management more secure and robust.
Australia has also started an investment plan of 2 billion dollars for this. Apart from this, work is also going on to strengthen the electricity network of ASEAN countries. Besides, investment and assistance is also being given for development projects in Pacific Island countries, so that energy and infrastructure can be improved there.
Emphasis has also been laid on new initiatives and future planning. The Quad countries have talked about launching a new initiative called “Quad Initiative on Indo-Pacific Energy Security”. Under which cooperation will be done in areas like technology, policy, energy management, international market analysis and emergency response exercises.
Along with this, a “Quad Fuel Security Forum” will also be established, where issues to energy security will be regularly discussed and coordinated.
