MSK Prasad On Suryakumar Yadav: Despite India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, captain Suryakumar Yadav’s batting remains a topic of discussion. His performance throughout the tournament was not as per expectations and his bat looked calm in IPL 2026 too. After continuous poor form, reports started emerging that the Indian team management may consider a change in T20 captaincy. However, on this issue, former Chief Selector M.S.K. Prasad (MSK Prasad) has given a big statement.
Taking away the captaincy would be a big mistake
MSK Prasad believes that removing Suryakumar Yadav from the captaincy would not be the right decision at this time. He said that frequent change of captain affects the team atmosphere and can create instability among the players. According to him, instead of acting hastily, the Indian team should prepare a strong transition plan.
Prasad suggested that the selectors should prepare future leaders along with the current captain, so that the team does not have to face sudden changes in the future.
keeping an eye on future captains
The former selector also gave the names of some players who can be groomed to captain the T20 team in future. It includes Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma and Ishan Kishan. He said that for the next six months, these players should get a chance to learn leadership in different series and difficult situations. This will strengthen the leadership of the Indian team and change will also happen in a smooth manner.
Surya’s batting was described as special
MSK Prasad also made it clear that despite his poor form, Suryakumar Yadav is a very important player for Team India. According to him, a batting style like Surya’s is rarely seen in Indian cricket. He said that the scoop over fine leg, the lofted shot over cover and the ability to play the good length ball behind square makes him different from other batsmen. In T20 cricket, such batsmen can change the course of the match in just a few balls and that is why the team needs them.
Bad form became a cause for concern
However, if we look at the figures, Suryakumar Yadav’s recent performance has been a matter of concern. In IPL 2026, he scored only 270 runs in 13 matches, where his average was 20.76. He could score only two half-centuries in the entire season and his team Mumbai Indians could not even reach the playoffs.
Even in the T20 World Cup 2026, Surya could score only 242 runs in nine matches. His only half-century came against America. In such a situation, questions are definitely being raised about his poor form, but at present the demand to retain both his place and captaincy in Team India seems to be increasing.
