New Delhi. A big change is being seen in the country regarding LPG. The central government has taken an important step amid the energy crisis and increasing pressure on gas supply. Now those houses which have Piped Natural Gas i.e. PNG connection will not be given domestic LPG cylinders. This decision of the government has been implemented with immediate effect and its objective is said to be to save gas and ensure supply to needy consumers.

Impact of Middle East tension on India

International circumstances are being considered a major reason behind this decision of the government. The increasing tension in the Middle East and the impact of shipping movement in the Strait of Hormuz have increased the pressure on India’s energy security. India imports large quantities of LPG for its domestic needs and most of it comes from Middle East countries. In such a situation, if the supply chain is disrupted, there may be a risk of gas shortage in the country and a huge increase in prices.

Government’s focus on PNG consumers

The government believes that the houses which already have PNG connection have less need for LPG cylinders. For this reason, preparations have now been made to exclude such consumers from cylinder distribution. This step will save LPG and help in maintaining availability of gas to the people living in rural and areas where piped gas network is not yet available.

Why is this decision considered necessary?

LPG consumption is continuously increasing in India. On the other hand, fluctuations in the prices of crude oil and gas in the global market have increased the concern of the government. In such a situation, it has become necessary to make balanced use of energy resources. The government has been working on the policy of promoting PNG network for a long time. Piped gas is considered more convenient and stable than cylinder gas. PNG connections are being increased rapidly in big cities so that people’s dependence on cylinders can be reduced.
