Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United Persistently Calling to Overtake Rivals in Race for Nottingham Forest Star Elliot Anderson

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are said to be ‘calling and calling’ in a determined effort to move to the front of the queue for Elliot Anderson ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The reports come amid suggestions that their fierce rivals Manchester City currently lead the chase for the Nottingham Forest midfielder. However, sources close to the club indicate that INEOS, United’s ownership group, remain undeterred and are continuing to push aggressively to secure the England international’s signature.

While United are actively pursuing Anderson, Manchester City are simultaneously working on their own negotiations. Despite the recent departure of Pep Guardiola and the imminent arrival of his successor Enzo Maresca, the Manchester City hierarchy still view Anderson as their top midfield target for the window.

Behind the scenes, Nottingham Forest are believed to have accepted that Anderson’s departure is virtually inevitable. The Telegraph reported this week that the Midlands club plans to use Moises Caicedo’s £115 million transfer to Chelsea as a benchmark for Anderson’s valuation. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has previously described Anderson as ‘elite’, further highlighting his growing reputation across Europe.

Given the hefty price tag, Manchester United could instead look to strengthen their midfield by signing two established players rather than spending the full amount on one marquee signing. For instance, Carlos Baleba’s dip in form during the 2025/2026 season might make him a more affordable option for United.

Similarly, Mateus Fernandes, who suffered relegation with West Ham, is expected to leave the club for a second consecutive summer. With his proven ability, Fernandes is likely aware that United could offer him a quick return to the Premier League — and potentially a spot in the Champions League as well.

Other midfielders such as Alex Scott, Adam Wharton, Ederson and Aurelien Tchouameni are also admired within the Manchester United hierarchy. However, it is understood that a move for Tchouameni would be far less feasible compared to the other names on their shortlist.
