This festival is celebrated on the 10th of Zilhijja, the last month of the Islamic calendar. The date of Bakrid is decided every year on the basis of sighting of the moon. This festival is celebrated in memory of Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim’s faith, sacrifice and dedication towards Allah. On this day, people of Muslim community perform the ritual of sacrifice after offering namaz.

When will Bakrid be celebrated on 27th or 28th May?

In India, this festival is usually celebrated a day later, hence Bakrid will be celebrated here on 28 May 2026.

Why are sacrifices made on Bakrid?

The tradition of making sacrifice on Bakrid is to Hazrat Ibrahim. According to Islamic beliefs, Allah had asked him to sacrifice his most precious thing to test him. Hazrat Ibrahim loved his son very much, but he decided to follow the orders of Allah. When he was going to sacrifice his son, Allah saw his true intentions and sent a tomb in place of his son. From then onwards this tradition of making sacrifice started.

What is the importance of sacrifice in Islam?

On the day of Bakrid, a large number of people reach mosques and Eidgahs from early morning to offer namaz.
After Namaz, people sacrifice animals as per their capacity.
In Islam, sacrifice is considered a symbol of sacrifice, humanity and dedication to Allah.
On this day the sacrificial meat is divided into three parts.
One portion is kept for one’s family and the other is given to relatives and friends, while the third portion is distributed among the poor and needy.
