While Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made it to the finals in the first qualifier match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026), Gujarat Titans (GT) star opener Sai Sudarshan got an unwanted and shameful record in his name, which he would never like to remember. In the 19-year long history of IPL, many batsmen have returned to the pavilion after being hit wicket, but this ‘unfortunate’ incident has happened with Sai Sudarshan for the second time. With this, he has become the first batsman in IPL history to be out hit wicket twice. The entire stadium including captain Shubman Gill was shocked by his dismissal in this knockout match against RCB. The ball crossed the boundary and the batsman was out: Strange incident happened in New Chandigarh. In this match, Gujarat Titans had a huge and mountain-like target of 255 runs to get the ticket to the final. The entire batting of the team largely depended on the opening pair. Fans were hopeful that Sai Sudarshan, who was leading in the race for the Orange Cap, and captain Shubman Gill would give the team an aggressive start. But something happened in the third over of the innings which dealt a blow to Gujarat’s hopes. Jacob Duffy brought the third over for RCB. Sai Sudarshan played an excellent cut shot on the third ball of the over. The ball took a brilliant edge of the bat and went across the boundary for a four, but as soon as the shot was played, the bat went out of Sudarshan’s hand. Sudarshan should have been careful that the bat does not hit the stumps, but he ran to score runs without looking. Meanwhile, the bat first fell on the ground and then bounced and hit the stumps directly. The wickets were scattered and despite getting a four, Sudarshan had to return to the pavilion in a very disappointing manner. He could score only 14 runs in 9 balls. In the year 2022 also, he lost his wicket in the same manner. This is the second time in his career with Sai Sudarshan that he was unlucky like this. Earlier, he was out in the same manner in a match played against Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2022. Mumbai’s legendary all-rounder Kieron Pollard was bowling at that time. Pollard bowled a sharp bouncer to Sudarshan, on which he attempted to play a pull shot. The shot missed completely and during this the bat slipped from his bottom hand and went straight to the off stump. Became the 20th player in IPL history, but is at the forefront of the record, being hit wicket in the cricket world is considered to be one of the worst moments for any batsman. Sai Sudarshan has now become the 20th player overall to be out hit wicket in the history of IPL. But he is the only and first batsman in the league to lose his wicket in this manner twice. This unfortunate wicket of Sudarshan in a big and pressure match like Qualifier 1 proved to be the turning point for Gujarat Titans, after which the team could not recover from this pressure.
