What is ‘Rami al-Jamaraat’?
This ritual is called “Rami al-Jamaraat” in Arabic. It means “to throw stones”. It is a symbolic religious act performed during Hajj at a place called Mina.
In this, pilgrims throw pebbles at three pillars, which are considered symbols of the devil. Its purpose is to convey the message of staying away from evil, sin and seduction.
What is the religious story of the ritual?
This tradition has its roots in the legend of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). According to belief, when Allah ordered Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Satan tried to stop and confuse him with this order.
But Ibrahim did not fall for the devil’s words and drove him away by stoning him and remained firm on his faith. This ritual is performed in memory of this incident, which is considered a symbol of faith and patience.
How is this ritual performed during Hajj?
During Hajj pilgrims go to Mina Valley and throw pebbles at three large pillars. Usually several pebbles are thrown at each pillar, and this process is completed in sequence. This ritual symbolizes renouncing evil and moving towards spiritual purity.
Bakrid and its global tradition
This ritual is performed in the last days of Hajj, which is directly to the festival of Eid-ul-Azha. On this day, Muslims around the world sacrifice animals and distribute their meat among the needy.
In this way, Bakrid is considered not just a festival but an occasion giving the message of sacrifice, faith and humanity.
