Bayern Munich have reportedly expressed strong interest in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, with early discussions already underway, according to reports emerging from Germany.
Newcastle United are bracing for a turbulent summer following new updates from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, who revealed that Anthony Gordon has attracted mounting attention from several major European clubs, among them Bayern Munich.
The 25-year-old winger, one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers during a challenging season, could be on the move this summer, as the Magpies are set to miss out on European competition next year.
For supporters still recovering from the departure of Alexander Isak last year, the potential loss of Gordon would be another significant setback to the club’s attacking framework.
The timing of these developments could hardly be worse for manager Eddie Howe, whose future at St. James’ Park continues to be a topic of heated discussion among fans.
Although Howe continues to enjoy support from the club’s hierarchy, the lack of consistency throughout the campaign has stirred frustration within the fanbase.
Adding to the uncertainty is the increasing possibility of further departures. Reports suggest that Tino Livramento is being pursued by Manchester City, while Sandro Tonali has also been linked with a potential move away from the club.
All of these potential exits are influenced by Newcastle’s need to improve their standing concerning the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
After heavy spending last summer and without the continued financial boost of Champions League participation, Newcastle may be compelled to balance the books through player sales.
Offloading Gordon, who joined for £45 million and is now valued at around £85 million, could provide crucial financial relief and allow the club to reshape a squad that has struggled to maintain its form this season.
Gordon has been impressive in the Champions League this term, scoring 10 goals prior to Newcastle’s elimination in the Round of 16 by Barcelona. Only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane have found the net more often than the former Everton winger in this season’s competition.
Bayern, who missed out on Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade last summer, have seen the German striker endure a difficult second half of the season, losing his place in the starting lineup.
The Champions League favourites are set to host Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of their quarter-final tie against the Spanish giants.
According to Sky Germany, Gordon has been informed of Bayern’s interest in signing him.
The report adds, “The 25-year-old is currently the preferred option for the left wing as both a back-up and competitor to Luis Díaz. Gordon has been made aware of the interest. Concrete discussions have already taken place, though the clubs have yet to establish direct contact.”
